The £55.75 million development, which used a number of Johnstone’s Trade products won Silver in the Best Education Project category at the 2016 Partnership Awards. The project was undertaken by Morrison Construction on behalf of hub North Scotland and Shetland Islands Council.
Morrison Construction used Johnstone’s high performance Acrylic Durable Eggshell, specified for its aesthetic qualities, in off-white for the main walls and in a variety of oranges and yellows to create striking feature walls. With excellent durability and washable properties, Acrylic Durable Eggshell was the ideal choice for the busy school environment including kitchen and bathroom areas. Johnstone’s Aqua Gloss was used to give the doors, frames and skirting boards a traditional gloss finish with the added advantage of being quick drying and low odour during application.
Additionally, PPG’s EP201 Water based Epoxy Resin Floor coating was used in the large plant room covering approx.1300sqm. It provides a smooth, easily cleaned surface that is resistant to dirt, moisture and oils.
Consultants within PPG Extra worked with Morrison Construction to provide technical advice on product compatibility that resulted in a robust paint specification being written alongside a colour scheme that created visually appealing spaces for both the pupils and staff. In addition to using colour to encourage students to learn by creating inspiring educational environments.
Anderson is the largest school in Lerwick, Shetland catering for up to 1,180 pupils in addition to a 100-bed residential building. It includes new science labs, upgraded security and technology, a multipurpose space on the school’s east side, installation of air conditioning (which the building did not previously have) and improved learning spaces.
David Grainger, Specification Development Manager at PPG, said: “Working closely with Ryder Architecture, Morrison Construction and Nodram Decorators enabled robust technical and colour specifications to be put in place. Our network of decorating centres within the local area ensured the materials were delivered to site on time and in full. The school is a modern building with first-class facilities that will serve the staff, pupils and community - it’s been a pleasure to be involved in this project.”
