A dilapidated Scout hut in Greater Manchester has been given a new lease of life thanks to a generous donation of paint and time by leading paint brand Johnstone’s and volunteers from Trafford Housing Trust.
Johnstone’s wasted little time in stepping forward when not-for-profit independent housing company, Trafford Housing Trust, signed up to take part in the annual ‘Give and Gain Day’ recently, with the healthy donation of paint for one of its projects.
The ‘Give and Gain Day’ sees business employees from across the UK leave their offices to take part in activities which make a positive difference to local communities on one day. This year, over 12,000 volunteers from 300 companies across the UK, including over 300 staff from Trafford Housing Trust, got involved in what was the biggest ‘Give and Gain Day’ to date.
The old scout hut in Sale, which was one of nine projects undertaken by Trafford Housing Trust staff on ‘Give and Gain Day’, was given a complete makeover for local charity 4 Cheeky Monkeys, which plans to use the newly-refurbished building to create a community centre for pre-school children, providing child care and parental support.
The team of 50 staff from Trafford Housing Trust worked hard to transform the centre into a family friendly facility, by repainting the building both inside and out, and revitalising the overgrown outside area into a welcoming garden for children to use.
To protect the exterior of the building, the hut was painted in Johnstone’s Opaque Wood Finish, which is formulated to be water repellent and resistant to UV, making it the ideal low maintenance exterior paint. In addition, Johnstone’s Smooth Metal paint, which offers up to five years’ protection from rust and has excellent anti-corrosive properties, was also used to protect the metal areas of the exterior.
To give the interior of the building a bright, fresh new look, a combination of Johnstone’s Jonmat, which is ideal for application on new plaster, and the market-leading Aqua Gloss range was used. The quick drying, low odour properties of the Aqua Gloss products made it ideally suited for a project that needed to be swiftly finished within just one day.
Elaine Johnson, Director of Localities at Trafford Housing Trust, said: “We were thrilled to take part in Give and Gain Day and make a real impact in the Sale West community. We couldn’t have done it without the in-kind support from our business partners, including the generous donation of paint from Johnstone’s Paint. It is a fantastic example of the positive impact businesses can have in their community.”
